Welcome to our Shiny New Blog

Frequent vistors will notice many new features on the blog today.  There’s the new banner which displays the developer programs that make up Telefonica Developer Communities.  O2 Litmus, Open Movil Forum, and Movistar Developer Platform in Mexico and Argentina are the beginning to our initiative to create a global presence for Telefonica’s developer ecosystem.  Over the coming months, Telefonica Developer Communities will continue to add developer programs from the company’s regional operators to build this global presence. We have big plans for helping developers get to market in the 25 countries where Telefonica operates.   The new blog is a location where you can learn about our progress and participate in the definition and development of our platform and community.

There are the new community features allowing developers, testers, end users and others to actively participate on the site and with one another.  You can join as a member of the site and share your profile, create groups, send private messages to each other, and interact with Facebook and Twitter.  There are new columns like “The Developer Perspective” where guest authors will offer insights and discussion on the mobile web and application ecosystem.  We’re also planning a series of How-Tos which focus on the characteristics of the mobile network and using those to improve user experience in applications.

We are inviting all members of the application ecosystem to join us in dialogue on strategy, product roadmap and platform features.  Whether you are a developer, a vendor, an enthusiast or a Telefonica customer, we want to hear from you.  This new blog offers a place for the dialogue to take place.  It’s easy to get started. Click on the “Join” label at the top of the page.

The Developer Perspective

Editor’s Note: Guest Author Tom Hume is a mobile developer and managing director at Future Platforms, and he runs a well respected eponymous blog at tomhume.org.  Hume is also a member of a UK developer advisory group for Telefonica Developer Communities.

I’ve spent the last 11 years working on mobile apps, 10 of those under the banner of Future Platforms, the Brighton-based software company I set up in 2000. This experience has given me a fair few grey hairs… but also a fairly long-term perspective on the industry. (more…)

Intense competition, excitement and intrigue? An audience of billions, entranced by the genius and performance of a few? An uplifting celebration of a global phenomenon, as teams from all continents and cultures compete for immense reward?

You might be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled upon a blog about the Football World Cup.

But no, I’m talking about the mobile industry at the start of the 21st century. A carnival of competition many times larger and ultimately more significant than even the planet’s biggest sporting event.

But let’s take a closer look at this analogy, and think about some of those involved…

The Developer Perspective is a column featuring guest authors from our developer community.  Periodically we’ll post an article contributed by one of your peers on topics that inform, reflect and inspire, from – well – the developer’s perspective.  Topics will address

  • business models
  • go to market strategies
  • feedback to operators
  • analytics
  • and more.

Feel free to suggest topics or authors.  We’re listening.
