Developer Economics 2010

Today sees the launch of Developer Economics 2010 and Beyond. This is a ground breaking piece of developer research, and we are very proud to have been able to collaborate with our friends at Vision Mobile to bring it to you.

We believe report plugs a real gap in the market, covering the battleground for developer mind share, with detailed analysis of every touch point in the developer journey, from platform selection to monetisation. The research is based on a set of benchmarks and a survey across 400+ developers globally, segmented into 8 major platforms: iOS (iPhone), Android, Symbian, BlackBerry, Java ME, Windows Phone, Flash Lite, and mobile web.

I’m most excited by the quality and reputation of the developers that kindly participated to help create Developer Economics 2010 and Beyond. The participants represent 53 countries and 290 individual companies. More than 40 percent of these respondents have at least five years experience in developing apps, while 78 percent have been developing apps for more than 12 months.

Participants include almost 20 Forum Nokia Champions, three Android Developer Challenge Finalists, two Handango Champions, winners of the Vodafone Summer of Widgets Contest, NavTeq Global LBS challenge, the Flash Lite Developer Challenge, and the Blackberry Developer Challenge.

We hope you enjoy reading the report as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Let us know your opinions in our specially created Developer Economics 2010 Group.

I’ve spent the last 11 years working on mobile apps, 10 of those under the banner of Future Platforms, the Brighton-based software company I set up in 2000. This experience has given me a fair few grey hairs… but also a fairly long-term perspective on the industry. (more…)

Intense competition, excitement and intrigue? An audience of billions, entranced by the genius and performance of a few? An uplifting celebration of a global phenomenon, as teams from all continents and cultures compete for immense reward?

You might be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled upon a blog about the Football World Cup.

But no, I’m talking about the mobile industry at the start of the 21st century. A carnival of competition many times larger and ultimately more significant than even the planet’s biggest sporting event.

But let’s take a closer look at this analogy, and think about some of those involved…

The Developer Perspective is a column featuring guest authors from our developer community.  Periodically we’ll post an article contributed by one of your peers on topics that inform, reflect and inspire, from – well – the developer’s perspective.  Topics will address

  • business models
  • go to market strategies
  • feedback to operators
  • analytics
  • and more.

Feel free to suggest topics or authors.  We’re listening.
